Zambia crash Somalia to top group B | CECAFA 2013

Somalia 0-4 Zambia

Former African Champions Zambia are through to the quarter finals of the GOtv CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2013 as group B leaders after thumping minnows Somalia 4-0 in a game played at Afraha stadium, Nakuru on Wednesday.

Festus Mbewe and Bornwell netted a brace each to ensure the Chipolopolo finish above Tanzania on goal difference despite attaining similar number of points. Mwape opened the scoring as early as the third minute capitalizing on a howler by Somalia goal keeper Mohammed Sharif who failed to tame Felix Katongo’s cross from the left flank before Mbewe doubled the lead a minute later. The big striker brilliantly chipped the ball over the rushing goalie after being played through by Rodrick Kabwe.

This awakened the Ocean Stars who now settled into the game and should have cut the lead in the 22nd minute but striker Hayow shot wide from close range after receiving a good cross from Sabri Mohammad.

After recess, Mwape got his second on the day after another blunder from Sharif gifted him an opportunity to extend the Chipolopolo lead which he took with both hands in the 59th minute. Ten minutes later Mbewe also completed his brace calmly slotting home after another defensive blunder.

The win implies Zambia tops the group on seven on goal difference ahead of Tanzania while Burundi qualify for quarters as one of the best third placed nations.
